Common Concerns New Cat Owners May Need Addressed

Posted on: 18 September 2015

Adopting a new cat can be a great way of providing yourself with low-maintenance companionship. However, taking care of a cat can be a very stressful experience if you are not sure of what these animals need. Therefore, it is common for new cat owners to have a couple of important questions that they need answered to ensure they are providing their new pet with the best home possible.

Is It Better To Feed Your Cat Wet Or Dry Food?

There are a seemingly endless number of different brands of pet food that you can feed your cat. However, these types of food are usually classified as either wet or dry, and it is common for new cat owners to be concerned about which is best for their pet. While either food will be fine for your cat, it is important for you to understand the advantages and disadvantages of each option.

In the wild, cats get most of their water from the prey that they kill and eat, and wet food will do a much better job of simulating this. However, it can pose a disadvantage because the wet food can become trapped between the teeth, which can lead to decay. Dry food, on the other hand, will largely avoid this problem, but your cat may not be getting enough water. You can help offset this problem by placing a bowl of water next to the food or covering the dry food with a gravy that is specially made for cats.

Does It Matter What Soap You Use To Clean The Litter Box?

Cleaning the cat's litter box is one of the least pleasant aspects of owning a cat, but many new cat owners will make the mistake of using a strongly scented soap when cleaning this box. This may seem like a good way to mask the odor of the litter box, but the smell may be strong enough to be unpleasant to cats' sensitive noses.

A better option for controlling the odor around the litter box will be to place a box of baking soda as close to the box as possible to absorb the odors. Also, you can opt for a covered litter box, which will help to keep the odor from it contained.

Caring for your new cat does not have to be a stressful or difficult task if you are informed about the needs of these animals. If you have a thorough understanding about the different types of cat food and the best way to control the smell from the litter box, you can avoid some of the more routine issues that new cat owners may struggle to handle.
